According to iKS-Consulting agency, total revenues of Russian fixed operators reached USD 13 billion in 2006. Yet with the slower growth of 13%, the fixed telephony’s share in overall telecom sector market dropped to 44% (from 49% in 2004). In 2006 the Russian fixed telecom sector had the following trends: transfer to new rules of inter-operator cooperation, rapid development of broadband access and growth of web-content market.
The broadband Internet access showed the most remarkable growth – 41% in 2006. Nevertheless, traditional voice services held the major share of the market - 60%. While the share of regional telecom markets grew and reached 56.1%, Moscow and St. Petersburg’s markets remain leaders with 34% and 6% respectively.
The broadband access was a hit of the Russian fixed telecom market. The market leaders, alternative telecom operators faced significant competition from SvyazInvest’s regional operators which introduced new internet services; providers of broadband access continue its consolidation; and new investors came to this market.
