While the Russian mobile market is a single entity with three dominant players and universal development tendencies the fixed-line market is a "patchy blanket" where each segment has its own growth rate, tendencies, leaders, and many minor players. The most predictable and transparent segment of this market are voice services for household users. This market is mostly controlled by Svyazinvest's inter-regional companies (IRC) and by other large fixed-line companies that operate 93% of all private telephones in Russia. In the last 2 years waiting-lists for new phones grew much shorter (i.e. providers managed to satisfy the demand) and IRCs cut investments in the network expansion. By the beginning of 2007 the Russian group will have 11 satellites by the state-run company Space Communications (RSCC) and 3 satellites of Gazcom, a daughter company of Gazprom. RSCC satellites are located on the synchronistic orbit between 14 degree of western and 145 degree of eastern longitude. The capacity of this satellite group equals to 220 transponders equivalent to 36 MHz in Ku-, C- and L- ranges. The Yamal system owned by Gazcom consists of one satellite at 49 degree of eastern longitude (C-range) and two satellites at 90 degree of eastern longitude (C- and Ku- ranges). Its capacity is 76 transponders equivalent to 36 MHz. This makes Russia world number three by the number of mobile phone users with China steadily in the lead (around 420 million) and the US holding the second place (around 220 million).
